Duration: 2-3 weeks

The “Pole-verize” Project

The goal of Pole-verize is to have the students recreate the carnival game called "Highball" or "Hi-Striker" whereby a lever is hit with a sledge hammer in an attempt to ring the bell at the top. The original prize was a cigar, and if the puck-like object only came close, it was "close but no cigar." Note: C-gars will not be given out to successful students, only A-gars.

Scope of Work

Every team of two (2) students will engineer a robust system that elevates a puck. They will also design a Flash Animation that explains the physics.

The following materials & tools will be provided:
-- 2x4 Doug Fir (6ft or 12ft)
-- ½” Electrical Conduit (5ft or 10ft)
-- ½”Conduit Coupling
-- Hammer
-- Hacksaw
-- Screws
-- Note: Bells are not provided

System Design Sketches
Flash Working Model
Ring My Bell Challenge
Master Action Plan

Digital Portfolio

The System Design Sketches must:
-- Be clearly hand- or computer-drawn
-- Have detailed views with dimensions for construction
-- Have detailed Bill of Materials (BOM)
-- Be scanned/saved as JPEG files
-- Be completed before the distribution of provided materials

The Flash Working Model must:
-- Animate the “hammer to bell” process from beginning to end
-- Explain the physics (i.e. Torque, Impulse, Momentum, & Energy) behind the process
-- Show equations used (Actual numbers are not necessary)

The Pole-verizer must:
-- Be safe, robust, and engineered
-- Be a minimum of 5ft tall
-- Be joined by screws
-- Not have any detachable pieces
-- Have a game theme where the user(s) tries to attain different heights (3 hit minimum)
-- Exceeding Expectations: Be a maximum of 10ft tall and/or not use a lever arm

The Ring My Bell Challenge will determine the most efficient Pole-verizer. The team will then have a chance to win cash prizes.

The Master Action Plan must:
-- Have ALL detailed items for the successful completion of the project
-- Reflect weekly benchmarks via the dates (Note: Benchmarks are determined by the teams)
-- Have team member assignments

The Digital Portfolio must:
-- Include the data from the Ring My Bell Challenge
-- Have a working hyperlink to the Flash Working Model
-- Have images of the System Design Sketches and Pole-verizer
-- Have working hyperlink to the Final Master Action Plan
-- Have a reflection covering "What role did physics play in the success or failure of this project?”

Grading Criteria

Downloadable Scoring Sheet

The students will be working in teams of two (2), but they will each receive an individual grade. The varying weights for the following criteria will determine their overall score.
-- Thoughtfulness & Thoroughness
-- Work Ethic & Behavior
-- Deadlines & Deliverables
-- Exceeding Expectations

By participating in Pole-verize, the students are agreeing to all the safety issues discussed in class, when authorized tools are in use.
